In Firefox 3.6.12 and Windows 7 with NVDA 2010.1, NVDA describes tables as only having 1 column if the table cells are display:block. Setting them (e.g. with Firebug) to display:table-cell fixes the problem.

If they're set to display:block, this is not a real table, so Firefox and NVDA shouldn't treat them as table cells.

In any case, NVDA is just using the information provided by Firefox. If you believe this is incorrect, file a bug against Gecko disability access APIs, although I suspect you will get the same response.
