Notepad
Firefox Nightly 6.0a1 (2011-05-02)
NVDA Snapshot 4207

In a blank edit field: HOME/END or LEFT/RIGHT ARROW, NVDA will read out "b l a n k"
For example, bring up Google.com or Notepad, press HOME, END, LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW. NVDA will read out "b l a n k"

Can't reproduce here with eSpeak. What synth are you using? Can you please test with eSpeak?
