After selecting "Check for update", nothing is presented to the user until the result of the update check appears. Two things should be done to improve this:

1. A progress dialog should be displayed while the update check is in progress; and
2. The check should time out after a reasonable time (e.g. 15 seconds) instead of the operating system timeout of several minutes.
