I am trying to read and edit a powerpoint file that my teacher sent me using nvda, the latest snapshot version. when I pressed the up and down errow to read the slides, it does not read them. instead, it will say nothing. and when I press the tab key, it does not say object place or title place holder. I have tried resetting nvda to its default settings. I tried it with jaws, and it works just fine. can you resolve this bug? I am using microsoft powerpoint 2010, would you like a coppy of the powerpoint soe you can test this out your selves?

Please attach the powerpoint file you are trying to read.
Also, please answer the following:

  • What operating system? (include service pack if any, 64 or 32 bit)
  • Version of Powerpoint? (Include service pack if any, 64 or 32 bit)
  • Exact snapshot version of NVDA
  • Are you running NVDA as a portable copy, or is it installed?
  • What interface language is NVDA set to?

Please also set your NVDA log level to input/output (in General Settings under Preferences in the NVDA menu), and open the file in Powerpoint. Try arrowing through the slides, tabbing between the slide shapes. Press f5 to run the slide show. Press space to move through the slides.

Finally, attach NVDA's log file to this ticket also.

If you need help with any of these tasks please let me know.

Technical info:
My first guess is that we are unable to register for application events.

This pptx file is protected. Currently NVDA cannot interact very well with files in Powerpoint 2010 while in Protected view. As it seems that this document is not password protected, you can go to File -> Info -> Enable editing and then you should be able to move around the file.
You may need to save the file and re-open it after enabling editing.
Changes:
Changed title from "better powerpoint support" to "Support Interacting with PowerPoint Presentations in protected view"

how do I enable this feature. I mean, how to I unprotect the file using file info?

When in a presentation, You need to go to the ribon with alt, choose file, info, enable editing.
A quick way to do this is to press the keys (one after another):
alt, f, i, e.

55f6698 reintroduces gesture bindings for slide and shape movement, and slide change, keys. NVDA can again detect movements and changes in PowerPoint 2010 protected mode.
