To reproduce this issue do the following:

  • go to: http://wet-boew.github.io/wet-boew/demos/index-fra.html This is a page containing samples from the Web Experience toolkit. Most Canadian government departments use these resources when coding their web sites. All of this content should be spoken by Jaws using whatever French synthesizer you have on your workstation if Language detection is turned on.
  • Press control+NVDAKey+d to bring up the list of landmarks and move to the first navigation section. press enter
  • Press tab to move to the menus within the application landmark. NVDA will use the default language instead of the language of the page to speak the menu items.
  • pressing escape will close the menus, using up and down arrows will move through the menu items, pressing tab, shift+tab, left and right arrows will move across the top level menus.

NVDA doesn't yet support language switching outside of navigable text content such as browse mode.

Changes:
Changed title from "NVDA reverts to default language when ARIA application roles get focus" to "Automatic language switching in focus mode"

Implementation note: Need to make sure to do this for names, descriptions, etc. when these are obtained from a virtual buffer.
Changes:
Changed title from "Automatic language switching in focus mode" to "Language switching for object reporting"

@jcsteh Does your implementation note of #3188 (comment) still stand exactly as that, given that automatic language switching is being improved and a speech refactor is also in the works?

That note was just a reminder of something to remember when we get to this; it wasn't intended to be a full implementation plan.
