Here is an html example about how it works:

NVDA is a free and open source screenreader. NVDA can't recognize meaning of an abbreviation. About the abr tag: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_abbr.asp

In both Firefox and Internet Explorer, the expanded abbreviation will be reported if you report the current navigator object (desktop NVDA+numpad5, laptop NVDA+shift+o). This matches the experience for sighted users where the abbreviation is only shown if the user moves their mouse over the abbreviation; i.e. user request.
