  1. Switch to eSpeak mandarin chinese.
  2. Read something by character. 当 will work.

Confirmed. This is a bug in eSpeak. This occurs with non-optimised builds, but does not occur with optimised builds. Because rc and final releases are optimised builds, this needn't block the release, but it should still be investigated.
