Would like NVDA to say whether a message in Outlook Express has been read or unread and if it includes an attachmen. I don't know if this still applies in Outlook, Windows Mail, or Live Mail.

Yes this is still the case in Live mail as well. I am sure I recall a comment about this that the tags did not create any event that nvda could read, but there could be other ways to achieve at least some reading of tags.
I know a number of people would like this to be possible. However it may need display chaining which would defeat the object if you want a portable reader!

Unread is reported as of 85927eb. Attachment still under investigation.
